Olga nikolova bio
I am an Assistant Professor of Data Science in the Division of Oncological Sciences at OHSU and visiting scientist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. I am a member of the Computational Biology Program, Center for Biomedical Data Science, Knight Cancer Research Institute, graduate faculty with the School of Medicine, and I hold a joint appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
I earned my Ph.D. in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology in the High Performance Computing group of Srinivas Aluru and was co-advised by Patrick Schnable. In my thesis work I developed parallel algorithms for Bayesian network structure learning and applied them to model transcriptional gene networks in plant model organisms. I was NCI/CCSB postdoctoral fellow with Adam Margolin at Sage Bionetworks. I became passionate about using machine learning to help understand clinical data during my internship with Chris Bishop at Microsoft Research - Cambridge, UK, where I investigated automated modeling of causal effects in an early-life environmental intervention study in childhood asthma and allergies (Manchester Asthma and Allergy Study).
I am in deep awe of the PNW and I often find inspiration in the mountains and on the coast.
